How to Keep Your Lipstick From Drying Your Lips

Why matte lipstick dries your lips and what you can do about it.

Lipstick is formulated differently from its glossy cousin. Every lipstick has certain key ingredients: pigment, wax and oil But the ratio of these ingredients are changed to determine whether a lipstick will be matte or glossy. A matte lipstick has more wax and pigment and less oil, which makes for a rich, opaque, product that is deeper in color and long-wearing.

However, the loss of the added oils makes the overall texture of the lipstick drier and more likely to settle in the cracks and crevices lips.
Lipstick wearers know that,  some of the best long-wear formulas and heavily pigmented shades can be incredibly drying. Have a lip colour you love but a crusty, chapped lip texture that annoye you? Here are some tips for keeping lips hydrated whilst flaunting a flawless lip look!

To ensure your lips won’t dry out throughout the day is to hydrate them with a lip balm before application, during wear, and after removal of your lipstick. If you maintain round-the-clock hydration after a good lip exfoliation, your lips will always be free of dead skin and ready to pout like a champ.

Application of lip balm before and after lipstick is easy and intuitive, but applying lip balm over lipstick can be tricky. Balm will extend the life of lip look. Ensure you have a tube of gloss to gently dab on chapped areas before reapplying lip colour.

A tube is essential. Rubbing or swiping on stick balm or gloss may cause pigment to rub off significantly more than if you simply tap on a lightweight product with your ring finger. Always have some balm on hand to perk up your look before freshening your lipstick, and you’re set for gorgeous, plump, moist lips.

Matte lipstick takes maintenance

Unlike gloss that you can put on and forget about, matte lipstick requires a bit more supervision. Be sure to carry a compact with a mirror to check lipstick throughout the day. You’ll want to touch it up after meals, drinking, or kissing. Also, if you notice your lips getting dry despite the prep work, add a tiny touch of your lip balm to your lipstick. It will make your matte lips a touch shiny, but it will ultimately make your look last longer.
